Husson Women’s Basketball Gains Early Lead, Defeats USM

Bangor,ME- The Husson University Women’s Basketball team (4-4,2-0 NAC) defeated the University of Southern Maine Huskies (4-5,1-2 LEC) 67-49 in a non conference game Tuesday night at the Newman Gymnasium.

The Eagles took the lead on a Sami Ireland free throw with 6:20 left in the opening quarter and never relinquished the lead going on a 19-4 run that went into the second quarter. Huskies top scorer Kristen Curley went down with a left ankle injury early in the first quarter and did not return. Husson continued to build their lead taking a 37-15 lead into halftime.

The Eagles maintained their 20 point lead in the third quarter with the two teams swapping baskets throughout the quarter with Husson holding a 47-25 advantage heading into the final quarter. The Huskies would go to the full court press and close the gap to within 10 points late in the fourth quarter but could get no closer as the Eagles hit free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.

Husson was led by Sydney Allen who had a career high 19 points to lead the team. Sami Ireland recorded a double double with 14 points and 10 rebounds, while Joan Overman and Emma Alley each pitched in nine points. Bailey Donovan pulled down 18 rebounds to go with her seven point contribution.

The Huskies were led by Victoria Harris with 16 points, while Abi Ramirez contributed nine points.

The Eagles will get a couple weeks off before flying down to Naples,FL for two non conference games vs Hamline and Wisconsin-Strout December 29th and December 30th.
