Sawyer Deprey, Bouchard help Caribou into semifinals

BANGOR, Maine- Sawyer Deprey scored a game 19 points, and Alex Bouchard scored 16 points on Saturday afternoon as the defending state champion and top seeded Caribou Vikings defeated the MDI Trojans 61-48 in a boys Class B quarterfinal at the Cross Insurance Center.

#8 MDI (9-11) began the game strong getting a Charlie Parker basket and a Jack Da Corte three-pointer to quickly make it 5-0. After Bouchard scored the first basket for Caribou, Da Corte scored again and Brady Renault knocked in a three-pointer to make it 10-2. The Vikings fought back and took their first lead and the lead for good on a Bouchard three-pointer 17-14, and led 19-16 after the opening eight minutes. Caribou led by as many as five in the second, and by the same margin at halftime 30-25.

Parker and Nathaniel Philbrook scored back to back hoops to start the third quarter for MDI to cut it to 30-29, but that is as close as the Trojans would get. S. Deprey then scored seven of the next eight Vikings points as Caribou used an 8-0 run to extend the lead to 38-29. Caribou led by 10 at the end of the period, then extended to their biggest at 15 at the start of the fourth when S. Deprey buried a three-pointer and his brother Parker also scored a hoop to make it 50-35. The Trojans did cut it to nine again later, but both S. Deprey and Isaac Marker hit 2-2 of the line down the stretch to ice the Vikings win. It is their 28th win in the last 29 games.

Bouchard had seven assists in addition to his point total in the Caribou win. Ethan Holdsworth contributed 12 points and four rebounds. Parker Deprey added 10 points, five rebounds, and three steals. Jacob Berkoski and Marker each chipped in two points. The Vikings outrebounded the Trojans 20-17, and shot 10-19 from the foul line. Caribou advances to a Wednesday night semifinal against #12 Old Town at 8:35 p.m.

Da Corte had 16 points to lead MDI in the loss. Renault added 13 points. Philbrook finished with nine, while Parker had six, and Ethan Merchant and Porter Isaacs both contributed two points a piece. The Trojans shot 4-4 from the foul line.
