Husson softball takes two from UMPI

March 25, 2021

In game one of a non-conference softball doubleheader at O’Keefe Field in Bangor Thursday afternoon, Husson used two big innings to pull away for a mercy shortened 11-3 six inning win over the University of Maine-Presque Isle. The game was scorless until the bottom of the fourth. That is when Madelyn Fowler hit an RBI single, Katie Raymond reached on an error by the first baseman that scored three runs, and Sydney Ames added an RBI single to make it 5-0. UMPI cut the lead to a pair in their half of the fifth inning on a two run double by Sarah Duncklee and an RBI single by Melanee Terry. The Eagles put it away with the mercy rule with six runs in the bottom of the sixth. Ames had an RBI double, Olivia McCarty a two run single, Jen Jones an RBI groundout, and then both Fowler and Erin Bonnefant ended it with RBI doubles. Jones (3-0) also got the win in the circle allowing three runs on seven hits with six strikeouts in 6.0 innings. With her 6 K’s, Jones becomes the all-time leader in school history with 501 strikeouts.

In game two, the visiting Owls scored four runs in the top of the first but the Eagles responded with four in the bottom half and would score the last 10 runs of the game for a 10-4 win that was shortened to five innings due to darkness. Kenzie Dore had three hits for Husson (6-0), while Whitney Bess and Morgan Coleman had two a piece with Dore and Coleman adding two RBI each. Ames (3-0) got the pitching win allowing four runs on eight hits in 5.0 innings. Terry had two hits and an RBI for UMPI (0-2). The two teams are scheduled to play another non-conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon in Bangor.
