Husson basketball teams finish off season with a pair of wins

At Newman Gymnasium in Bangor, the Husson women’s basketball team finished their season at 6-1 withstanding a second half rally and taking a 72-67 win over Saint Joseph’s College on Sunday afternoon.

The Monks had beaten the Eagles by 30 points on Friday night in Standish, but Husson came out with 56% shooting in the first half and built a big lead by as many as 17. Saint Joseph’s College (5-1) rallied and actually took a pair of leads in the fourth quarter, before the hosts ended the game on a 7-2 run to pick up the win. Katherine Alley and Makaeyln Porter both had 16 points to lead Husson, while Cassie Urso had 15. The Eagles hit 13-25 from three-point range. Jayne Howe led all scorers with 20 points for the Monks.

Down at Saint Joseph’s College in Standish, the Husson men’s basketball team finished a perfect 10-0 in their shortended season getting 23 points from J Thomas for an 81-78 win over the Monks.

After Saint Joseph’s (2-4) had a pair of four points leads in the first half, the Eagles regained the lead 31-30 and led by seven at the half. Husson would lead by as many as nine in the second half, before the Monks came back and took a pair of two point leads.  Brett Cunningham made a layup with 1:36 left to give the Eagles an 80-78 advantage. St Joe’s had several chances to tie it down the stretch, including a Jack Casale game tying three-point attempt in the closing seconds that missed. Scott Lewis added 18 points in the win, while Cunningham had 10 points. Casale led all scorers and finished with a double double in the loss with 27 points and 13 rebounds.
