Maine Field Hockey, women’s soccer split Sunday games

At the Maine Field Hockey Complex in Orono, Chloe Walton scored two goals as the Maine Black Bears Field Hockey team stayed unbeaten in America East play with a 4-2 win over the New Hampshire Wildcats.

Brittany Smith scored her first of the season 10:22 into the second quarter and Maine had a 1-0 halftime lead. The first of the day for Walton 42 seconds into the third made it 2-0. UNH (4-4-0, 1-3-0 America East) would twice cut it to a goal, as Ava Mariani made it 2-1 about 4:30 after the Walton goal. Hana Davis regained the two goal advantage for the Black Bears early in the fourth quarter with her first of the year, before the Wildcats Bloem van den Brekel made it 3-2 with 5:19 left. Walton capped off the win less than two minutes later, the fourth straight victory for Maine (4-2-0, 4-0-0 AE). Mia Borley made three saves on five shots in net. Next up for the Bears is another America East matchup at Monmouth next Friday.

At Lavalle Stadium in Stony Brook, New York the host Seawolves stayed unbeaten in conference play with a 3-1 America East women’s soccer win over the Maine Black Bears.

Alyssa Francese had a penalty kick goal 10:04 into the first half for Stony Brook (4-2-0, 4-0-0 America East) and Chelsie DePonte added another goal late in the first half for a 2-0 halftime lead. Rachel Florenz finished off the Seawolves scoring just over halfway through the second half. Jane Stevens ruined the shutout bid with a late tally for Maine, just their second goal of the spring season. Kira Kutzinski made three stops in net for Maine, who sees their record drop to 0-5-1, 0-3-1 in America East. The Black Bears are scheduled to host Vermont next Sunday afternoon.
