Skowhegan 2021 girls tennis preview

2019 record: 9-3

Coach : Andrew Staples

Expectations:

“This year, I expect us to compete and play hard every day. What that looks like in terms of a win/loss record remains to be seen,”Staples said. “With the loss of the 2020 season, we were hit pretty hard with the loss off top players and the inability to develop new and returning players so we want to take advantage of an early spring, hit the courts hard, have meaningful practices and be ready for matches.”

Strengths:

“Our strengths lie in upperclassmen leadership and a very athletic lineup,”Stapes said. “Many, if not all of the new players have experience in other sports and have been very coachable so far.”

Weaknesses:

“Our weaknesses will be shown in the fact that we are in a “rebuilding” situation stemming from the COVID fallout,”Staples said. “The top seven of the lineup will consist of all returners and three new players.”

Top players

Returners: Marlee Hisler (Sr.), Lily Wright (Sr.), Ashley Davis (Sr.), & Joey Ramsdell (Jr.). New players: Sarah johnson (Fr.), Gemma Kennnedy (Fr.), Carly McCabe (Fr.), Miña Peythieu-Calder (So.), Norah Jewell (So.), Kate Kelso (So.), Lexi Bell (Jr.), Zoe Lambke (Jr.)

 Coaches comment:

“The team has good chemistry so far. I have a good group of kids who are working hard and progressing nicely. After a year away, coming to terms with what we had lost, it’s so nice to be back at it. Being around the kids has been great. I didn’t realize how much I missed it until we got started back up,”Staples said. “We are excited to be able to have fans in attendance this spring.”
