May 3, 2021

EAST CORINTH- The Central Red Devils scored six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning on Monday, rallying for a 10-6 high school baseball win over the Piscataquis Community High School (PCHS) Pirates in a game played at Central High School.

In a scoreless game in the bottom of the second inning, Central struck first. Scottie Ferrie led off with a double and stole third base, and would score on a groundout to first by Bryce Burns. Makiah Bryant later hit a two run single to make it 3-0 Red Devils. PCHS (2-2) took their first lead in the fourth. Alex Lyon and Connor Chase led off with singles, and then Dawson Simpson laid down a bunt that was thrown away by the third baseman Burns at first allowing both Lyon and Chase to score. A passed ball allowed Simpson to score from third, and Matt Chadbourne would later double in a run to make it 4-3 Pirates. Central tied it back up 4-4 in their half of the fourth when Ivan Tibbets scored on a wild pitch.

Isaiah Conary scored on another Central error in the fifth to give PCHS the lead back, and then he would add an RBI single in the sixth inning for a 6-4 Pirates advantage. Malachi Miller started the Red Devils rally in the bottom of the sixth with a groundball single to left. Jack Miller followed with an infield single, and then Tibbetts got hit with a pitch to load the bases with noone out. Noah Kepple then popped out to second base and Benjamin Speed struck out for two quick outs. Ferrie got hit with a pitch to bring Central within one, before Burns got the game winner with a sharp two run double down the left field line to give the advantage back to the hosts 7-6. Simon Allen added on a two run double, and Hunter Weeks an RBI single to center to cap off the huge inning. The Pirates got one runner on in the seventh on the sixth Red Devils error on the day, but couldn’t score and Allen made a spectacular diving catch in left center field to end the game.

Bryant started on the mound for 3-1 Central and got a no decision allowing three runs (none earned) on six hits in 3+ innings with one walk and one strikeout. Ferrie got the win in relief allowing three runs (two earned) on three hits with four strikeouts in 3.0 innings. Ferrie and Malachi Miller both had two hits for the Red Devils, with Ferrie scoring twice. Matt Chadbourne had three hits for PCHS with two singles and a double, while Tyrus Cobb added two hits. Matt Chadbourne was also the losing pitcher allowing six runs (four earned) on eight hits with two walks and five strikeouts in 5+ innings.
