Kimball and Ponte power Dexter baseball to win over PCHS

May 29, 2021

DEXTER— It isn’t easy winning two baseball games in one day. It is even more difficult when you have to do it against two good teams and travel 76 miles round trip to get it done.

Dexter took a morning drive to Orono and defeated the high powered Red Riots team. They capped off the day with a 9-4 win over Piscataquis Community High School (PCHS) late Saturday afternoon.

The Pirates jumped out to a 1-0 lead when Scott Chadbourne singled home Matt Robinson. The lead didn’t last long as the Tigers started their half of the first inning with four runners reaching base, including Parker Ponte smacking a RBI double and Kayden Kimball hitting a single that scored Ponte. Nathan Fernald finished the scoring in the inning on a hit that sent home Brett Kusnierz. The Tigers added one more in the third inning when Payson Reinhardt scored Fernald with a base hit.

While the offense was producing for the Tigers, Bryce Connor was keeping the Pirates from coming back. Connor pitched four innings, allowing two runs on five hits and two walks, while striking out one.

The Pirates had their biggest threat after Connor left the game. PCHS scored one on a bases loaded walk from Ty Cobb. Ben Bourgoin came in and shut the door, retiring the final two batters of the inning and leaving the bases loaded.

The Tigers put the game away in the bottom of the fifth inning when Kimball came through again this time with a double that scored Bourgoin and Ponte.

Kimball and Ponte had three hits each to lead the Dexter (8-4) offensive attack. Kimball reached base four times, had four RBI, scored two runs, and was a homer shy of the cycle. Ponte had two doubles, scored three runs, and had one RBI. Robbie Dorman reached base three times, had two hits, and one RBI. Reinhardt and Fernald each reached base three times. Dexter will host Central on Tuesday.

Robinson had two hits, one run scored, and one RBI for the Pirates. Colby Chadwick reached base twice. Chadwick, Scott Chadbourne, Matt Chadbourne, and Ben Higgins had one hit each. PCHS (4-8) will finish the regular season at Lee Academy on Wednesday.
