Miami strands 12 men on base, Boston wins third straight game

May 29, 2021

Bobby Dalbec, Kevin Plawecki, and Hunter Renfroe had run scoring hits and Nathan Eovaldi picked up his sixth win of the season on Saturday evening, as the Boston Red Sox made it three straight wins with a 3-1 victory over the Miami Marlins in front of the biggest crowd at Fenway Park since September of 2019 (25,089).

Rafael Devers and Renfoe both had one out singles to help set up the Dalbec RBI single that made it 1-0 Red Sox in the second. Renfoe hit a one out double in the fourth, and then with two outs Plawecki came through with an RBI single to center to double the lead. Miami (24-28) had many great chances in the game, leaving 12 men on base including eight in scoring position. With two outs in the top of the eighth, Darwinzon Hernandez walked Isan Diaz. Hirokazu Sawumara came on but allowed an infield single to Jorge Alfaro, which ended up also going for an error on a throw to first by Devers allowing Diaz to get to third. A wild pitch got Alfaro to second base, but Sawumara stuck out Jose Devers to end the threat. Boston (32-20) added on with two outs in the bottom half when Devers doubled off the green monster, and Renfoe singled to score him and make it 3-0. Magneuris Sierra led off the ninth for the Marlins with a bunt single, stole second, and then scored on a one out Jesus Aguilar RBI single off closer Matt Barnes. Barnes though induced a 4-6-3 double play on a ball hit by Garrett Cooper to end it.

Eovaldi (6-2) didn’t allow a run on four hits with one walk and seven strikeouts in 5.1 innings. Josh Taylor, Adam Ottavino, Hernandez, and Sawumara all got holds and Barnes got his American League leading 12th save. Renfoe and Devers had three hits each, and JD Martinez added two doubles. Sierra had three hits and Cooper had two in the loss for Miami. Trevor Rogers (6-3) took the pitching defeat allowing two runs on nine hits with no walks and six strikeouts in 6.0 innings. The teams are scheduled for a 1:10 p.m. start time on Sunday in the series finale. LHP Eduardo Rodriguez (5-3, 5.06 ERA) goes for the Sox against RHP Sandy Alcantara (2-4, 3.46) for the Marlins.
