BANGOR— Kristen Russell scored 15 of her game high 21 points in the second half to lead Schenck to a 54-39 win over Deer Isle-Stonington in a Class D girls basketball quarterfinal game on Tuesday afternoon at the Cross Insurance Center.
The Mariners jumped out to a 10-2 lead and held a 12-11 after the first quarter. Luna Perry-St. Peter (6) and Macey Brown (4) combined for 10 points in the first eight minutes.
Hannah Sewall gave Schenck their first lead with 7:20 left in the second quarter. It would be a lead they wouldn’t give back. The Wolverines held a 19-16 lead at halftime.
Deer Isle-Stonington got within one (19-18) early in the third quarter. Schenck scored the next eight points and the lead never got below six the rest of the way.
Brown led the Mariners with 11 points and 14 rebounds. Perry-St.Perry had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Taytum Chase also finished in double figures with 10 points. Deer Isle-Stonington finished the season with a 17-2 record.
Russell added seven steals, two 3 pointers, and two assists to go with her game high point total. Freshman Lidia Matarazzo had 14 points (3 three pointers). Sewall recorded 11 points, 14 rebounds, three blocks, and two assists. Schenck (14-6) will play Southern Aroostook in a semifinal game on Thursday afternoon.
