Gonzaga pulls away from Maine women’s basketball on Monday night

The #23 Gonzaga Bulldogs put four players in double figures on Monday night, and defeated the Maine Black Bears 62-43 in a women’s basketball game played at the McCarthey Athletic Center in Spokane, Washington.

Maine would stay close early on and for a majority of the first half. The Black Bears had one lead in the game at 5-3 on a three-pointer by Paula Gallego. Gonzaga went back ahead and stretched the lead to 13-7 later in the first, but the guests finished the opening period on a 7-2 run and a three point play by Sarah Talon cut it to 15-14. Maine would still be within 22-20 in the second, before GU would end the first half on a 10-2 spurt of their own for a 32-22 lead at the halftime break. Gonzaga would score the first nine points of the third quarter to push the advantage out to 19. The Bulldogs would lead by as many as 21 in the second half, and the Black Bears wouldn’t get closer than 13 the rest of the way.

Kaylynne Truong had 15 points to lead Gonzaga to the win. Brynna Maxwell had 13 points, while Eliza Hollingsworth and Yvonne Ejim both had 10. The Bulldogs out of the West Coast Conference improve to 6-1 on the season. Talon led Maine in the loss with 13 points and four assists. Caroline Bornemann added seven points, while Gallego, Adrianna Smith, and Olivia Rockwood had five points a piece. The Black Bears are now 3-4 and return back home to take on Princeton on Friday at 7 p.m. at the Pit.
