August 27, 2023

The Maine Black Bears Field Hockey team evened their record by recording their first win of the 2023 season on Sunday afternoon, blanking the Providence College Friars 2-0 in non-conference action at the Maine Field Hockey Complex in Orono.

Molly Mackesy, who scored the lone goal in a season opening loss to Boston College on Friday, got what turned out to be the game winner for Maine at the 10:39 mark of the first quarter off an assist from Brynn Dzengelewski. Providence immediately had a chance to tie it up when Lisa McNamara had a penalty stroke on Black Bears goalie Mallory Drayer just 2:04 later, but Drayer was able to come up with the save. Another penalty shot occurred 10:35 into the second quarter, this time for the hosts and Poppy Lambert would convert on it for her first of the season firing a hard quick shot into the left corner of the cage past Friars goalie Asia Porter for a 2-0 halftime advantage. Despite some good chances for both teams the rest of the way, that is the way it would end.

As they did in the first game of the season, both Maine goaltenders split their time in net. Drayer played the first half and Jayde Temby played half number two, both making one save in the combined shutout. Maine had a 14-4 edge on shots attempted (9-2 on goal). Both teams also had alot of penalty corner opportunities, which was 13-9 in favor of the Black Bears. Porter made seven saves in the loss for Providence College (0-2) out of the Big East Conference. Maine (1-1) continues their nine game homestand on Friday when they welcome in Boston University for a 2 p.m. start time.
