MMA women’s soccer falls in first ever NCAA Tournament game

The North Atlantic Conference Champion Maine Maritime Academy Mariners women’s soccer team, in their first ever NCAA Division III Tournament appearance, would fall 5-0 to #4 Amherst College on Saturday at Hartwell-Rogers Field in Babson Park, Massachusetts.

The NESCAC Champion Amherst (17-1-1) took control with goals from Abby Schwartz, Alyssa Huynh, and Fiona Bernet in the first half. Schwartz tallied in the sixth minute that ended up being the game winner. Liza Katz and Carter Hollingsworth both notched markers in the second half for the Mammoths. They dominated shots on goals 23-3. They also had 12 corner opportunities to none for the Mariners. Isa Thesing made 18 saves in net in the loss for Maine Maritime Academy, who ends their season with a final record of 15-5-1. Huynh and Katz both had a goal and an assist for Amherst College, who has won 10 games in a row and will play MIT in a second round game on Sunday afternoon.
