Mattanawcook basketball sweeps varsity/JV games from Sumner

December 31, 2023

At Lincoln, the Mattanawcook Academy Lynx boys basketball team finished the 2023 portion of the schedule in fine fashion on Saturday with a wire to wire 57-43 victory over a resilient and talented Sumner Tigers (2-5) team. The victory gives the Lynx an impressive 6-1 season record and as many wins in the campaign as any other team in Class C North. Fort Fairfield and Hodgdon each have garnered six wins to date.

These Lynx are best when the ball is shared and on Saturday seven MA players were in the scoring column. Freshman point guard Kooper McCarthy paced the scoring parade with 16 points, including 10 in a decisive fourth quarter. Kooper was an impressive 8-8 at the free throw line in crunch time in the final period. The Lynx combined to shoot 10-10 (100%) from the charity stripe. McCarthy also added seven rebounds and three assists. Avery Jordan continued his offensive firepower with 13 points, highlighted by an acrobatic, double pump first half reverse layup. Freshman True Weatherbee was a tremendous spark off of the bench with seven points and four rebounds, with five of those points coming in the second half. Also providing a lift from the second unit was junior guard Bradly Dill with five points and a first quarter dagger three-point shot. Carter Milner six points, Andrew Oliver six points/four steals, and James Trott were vital cogs in the MA arsenal. Milner was charged with the task of shadowing high scoring forward extraordinaire Isaiah Rivers of the Sumner Tigers. Milner and Lynx help defenders limited the talented Rivers to nine points. Picking up the scoring for the Sumner Tigers was Bryson Parrit with 16 points and Logan Crowley with 11.

After the New Year holiday break, Mattanawcook will host their rival the Lee Academy Pandas on Thursday, January 4 at the Lynx Den with 5 JV/6:30 varsity the scheduled time starts.

In the girls varsity game, the MA Lynx who are #2 in Class C North improved to 7-1, by dominating Sumner 68-30 with a combination of strong inside/out play. MA next plays Wednesday at 6 p.m. at home against Woodland.

In the boys JV opener, Mattanawcook (7-0) defeated Sumner 50-32. Pacing the Lynx was True Weatherbee with 10 points, Landon Arthers with nine, Ryder Osnoe and Logan Martinez with eight each, Liam Walsh with seven, Justus Mendall four, and Ethan Faulkner along with Jacoby Savage with two points a piece. The young squad of Coach Brett Crocker continues to impress and improve.
