USM baseball advances to regional championship round in Gorham by beating Babson College on Sunday night, after falling to Rowan University

The University of Southern Maine baseball team won an elimination game Sunday night over Babson College to keep their season going and advance to the regional championship, after falling to top seed Rowan University earlier in the day at the NCAA Division III Regional Tournament at Ed Flaherty Field in Gorham.

In the first game, Rowan (34-5) scored seven times in the bottom of the first inning and the Profs rolled into the championship round on Monday with an 18-7 win. Brayden Davis had three hits and five RBI including a grandslam for Rowan, while Joey Bogart had three hits, four RBI, and scored three times. Caleb Vacchiano (Sacopee) had three hits and nailed his second homer of the regional, a two-run shot, while Evan Baschnagel and Kyle Douin (Cony) both had two hits and one RBI each for USM. Kaiden Morin (Brewer) also chipped in two RBI. The Huskies kept their season alive in advancing to the championship in Game 2 in eliminating the Beavers of Babson 14-4. Peter Keblinsky (Ellsworth) had three hits and three RBI. Douin had four hits and Mike Anquillare had two. Douin, Anquillare, Vacchiano, and Morin drove in two runs a piece. Hayden Strout (Foxcroft) came up one out short of a complete game and got the pitching victory going 8.2 innings allowing four runs (none earned) on five hits with three walks and two strikeouts. Strout threw 126 pitches/81 for strikes. USM (32-11) will face Rowan again in the championship round on Monday, and will need to beat the Profs twice in order to win the regional title. Game 1 begins at 11 a.m., with an if necessary second game scheduled for 3 p.m.
