Gorham baseball tops Bangor in 11 innings to win first Class A state title

Hunter Finck had a game winning RBI single in the 11th inning on Saturday, lifting Gorham to a 3-2 Class A Baseball State Championship win over Bangor at Morton Field in Augusta.

Gorham staked themselves to a 2-0 lead in the sixth inning on a bunt single by Sawyer Smith and a bases loaded walk from Luke Taaffee. Bangor responded in the bottom half on a RBI double by Gavin Glanville-True and a RBI sacrifice fly from Jacoby Harvey to tie it up. The scored stayed there until the top of the 11th with Gorham up to bat. With two outs, Cooper Whitehead was hit by a pitch and Wyatt Washburn walked. Finck then came up to bat and delivered the difference in the game with a single to right scoring Whitehead. Trey Tennett led off with a single in the last half of the 11th for Bangor, and then stole second. Gavin Glanville-True grounded out to send Tennett to third, but Washburn retired Ethan Sproul on a flyout and Harvey on a popout in foul territory to end it.

Tennett and Kyle Johnson had two hits each for Bangor. Gavin Glanville-True had one hit, one RBI, and one run scored. Lucas Rutherford went the first six innings on the mound giving up two runs on five hits, while Nick Llerena suffered the loss in six innings of relief as he was charged with one run on two hits. Bangor finishes as the runner-up with a final record of 16-4. Finck had three hits for Gorham, while Smith had two. Miles Brenner struckout six and gave up two runs in his seven inning no-decision on the hill, while Washburn earned the victory with four innings of relief. The two pitchers didn’t walk anyone in the 11 innings. It is the first state championship in Class A for Gorham (19-1), who previously won their first crown in Class B in 2005.
