The Penobscot Valley High School (PVHS) Howlers rallied from a 2-0 deficit to defeat Katahdin 5-2 in the Class D North softball championship game at UMaine on Tuesday afternoon.
Katahdin took advantage of an error to score two runs in the top of the third inning. PVHS responded quickly when Abby Farley hit one to the wall that scored Charlotte Dube and Lila Cummings. Farley would also come home to score on an error.
Lauren Veino took care of things in the circle. Veino allowed only two unearned runs on six hits and six walks, and she struck out seven.
Cummings had three hits and two RBI, and reached base three times with two RBI. PVHS will play NYA in the state championship game on Saturday, June 20th at St. Joseph’s College in Standish at 4 pm.
Polly Cullen had three hits, including a double to lead the Cougars offense. Cullen also pitched and allowed five runs (four earned) on five hits and nine walks, and she struck out 11.
