Foxcroft Academy 2022/2023 boys basketball preview

November 28, 2022

Team: Foxcroft Boys Basketball, Class B

Coach: Toby Nelson

2021/2022 record:  13-5

Expectations:

“We return a strong group of players, but they lack a lot of varsity playing time. They will get that this year,” Nelson said. “Class B and the Big East, particularly, are full of quality teams with veteran leadership. We have to play our best in each game to have a chance.  It’s that good.”

Strengths:

“I have a group of good athletes that know how to win, whether coming back from last year or from being members of our football or soccer teams this fall. Winning is contagious, and it feels good,” Nelson said. “My guys work hard to win. We’ve got a good mixture of speed and a bit of size.  Now we have to put the ball in the hoop.”

Weaknesses

“Two or three players are coming back that have significant varsity time, so we will have guys on the floor who are figuring it out on the go,” Nelson said. “Inexperience would be a weakness, but that should come with time.”

Returning players: Seniors – Caden Crocker, Adam Conner, and Cam Chase. Juniors – Devin Henderson, Wyatt Rayfield, Jadon Richard, and Jack Smith

New Players – Seniors – Ivan Mutafchiev and Fernando Oliveira, Juniors – Kaiden Whitten and Ashton Ade, Sophomore – Silas Topolski

Coaches comment

“Last year, we made the playoffs (Cross Center) for the first time since 2013.  We had a great year, but that was last year.  This year’s club will be athletic, fast, and fun to watch,” Nelson said. “Obviously, we hope wins will come from that, but it should be a competitive year for our team.”

Schedule:

The Ponies open the season on the road against Houlton (December 10th) and Central (December 14th) before the home opener against Washington Academy on December 17th.  Eastern Maine Sports Media will have coverage of eight regular season games for the Ponies, including the home opener.
